We went to Killaloe Activity Centre on our school tour. We went there by bus. They gave us wetsuits, helmets and lifejackets. Then they divided us into groups. We did kayaking, canoeing, sailing and other water sports. Towards the end of the day we build a huge raft with about 15-20 kayaks and canoes. We climbed to the top of the raft, when we were up there we sang songs. We were freezing. We jumped down off the raft into the lake and swam towards the shore. Then we brought back in the kayaks and the canoes and got dressed. We had a lovely picnic by the lake. We played games while we waited for the bus. It was a super day and everyone had great fun.

Last week our class went to the fire station. We walked there. Sooner or later we got to the Fire Station. We walked in and we met two firemen – Paul and Tim. They brought us into a room were there were fire suits. Then another fireman slid down the pole and we all laughed. Then we went outside to their training area and we saw the fire engine, and we saw the hose and two types of jaws of life. Then we got to spray the hose at cones and we wet the teacher! We got to go in the fire engine. Tim was driving the fire engine and we got our photos taken.
Then we went to the park and we sat on the grass and ate our lunch. And then Ms. Cosgrave came into the park with a bag full of ice pops . After that we went into the playground group by group . Later we walked back to school. Then we looked at our pictures. We had a really fun day.

Today, we got the bus to Curragh Chase Park and took part in National Tree day hosted by Coillte. We walked through the park looking at really old trees and some really tall trees. We learned the names for the different trees and the fruits they bare. There were lots of trees from all different countries. We collected different kinds of leaves and horse-chestnuts, pine cones and lots of other things. We saw different animal homes including the big spider webs and bird’s nests!
At the end of our nature walk, our guide gathered us outside the big house and told us about the bats that live inside the house. He also showed us how to tell how old a tree is from counting the rings on its bark.
Before we went back onto the bus, we had fun in the playground and sat around talking about what we had learned during the nature walk.
We had a great day!

Our New Trees
Posted by: Admin | March 14, 2010 | No Comment |Before Christmas we were forced to cut down some of the trees in the school grounds. Some of them were decaying and others were in danger of hitting the power lines on the road.
On Tuesday, March 9th. which was Tree Day, we planted new trees to replace the old ones. We planted birch, oak, mountain ash, hornbeam and beech, native Irish varieties.
Each class and the Green Schools Committee helped to plant a tree. See our gallery of photos below.
